Montecristo Cigars are one of the biggest Cuban Cigar brands. Their sales amount to around 50% of Havana's yearly exports. The name Montecristo means mountain of Christ, and is inspired by the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, written in 1845. The book was a favourite for cigar rollers to listen to in Cuban Cigar factories, and is based on the story of Dantés, who was framed into imprisonment and decides to seek revenge.
Montecristo Cigars were founded in 1935 by ambitious cigar-maker Alonso Menendez, who bought the Particulares Factory and changed its named. After partnering with Jose "Pepe" Garcia, the duo purchased the Factory of H. Upmann Cigars and moved all production there. During the 70s and 80s, Montecristo received worldwide recognition. After one of the greatest torcedores Jose Manuel Gonzalez became factory floor manager, he introduced a range of new Cuban Cigars, including the Montecristo Especial No. 2 Cigar.
Competing with Cohiba Cigars as arguably the world's best known, Montecristo is a reference point for many cigar aficionados. Initially owning just five vitolas, the brand now includes the world's best-selling Montecristo No. 4 Cigar and the lastest Montecristo Linea 1935 Cigar range. Comprising of a Carmelite wrapper and Carmelite lacquer finish, these special cigars commemorate Montecristo's legacy before nationalisation, and are some of most prestigious ever made. Showcased in 2017 at the Festival del Habanos, the cigars are the first full-body flavoured from the brand.
